Gyms warned: communicate with members
Gyms have been told they must communicate with members in order to keep their business, as research reveals that lack of communication is the number one reason for low satisfaction. Paul Bedford, educational trainer and presenter for the fitness industry, conducted a survey of 10,000 members in fitness environments across the UK, which found an overwhelming majority had not received any acknowledgments during their last ten visits to their gym. He warned delegates at the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) Convention that acknowledging members when they enter and leave the gym, monitoring progress and setting regular programmes are paramount when it comes to member retention. He said: "Members want to be spoken to - not necessarily full conversations or during intense exercise but they want to feel valued."

New machine will help tackle obesity
A Designer and education lecturer have developed an exercise machine to help tackle the obesity crisis which allows children to play computer games and get fit at the same time. It has taken Angela Muir and her partner Robert McKechnie - from Dollar in Clackmannanshire - just over a year to market the Kidzcirkit. She was inspired to develop it after taking her children to a gym only to be told they couldn't use the exercise equipment in case of injury. While Angela works in the education sector, her partner has brought his design skills in the arena of plant and machinery to bear in the business.

New suite unveiled at Liverpool College
A New Fitness Suite has been opened at a Specialist Sports College in Liverpool. St Ambrose Barlow School converted a disused kitchen area into a cardiovascular studio equipped with machines including treadmills and cross-trainers as part of their Health and Fitness Scheme. Students will now be able to use the suite as part of their PE lessons and extra curricular activities. Deputy Head, Steve Hall, said: "The introduction of the Fitness Suite will be a great asset to the school and has already proved incredibly popular. It has definitely improved the levels of interest and enthusiasm amongst the older students. The teachers are actively using the facility too and are leaving work feeling refreshed and invigorated after a work out."
