Bosses should do more on employee fitness
UK bosses are to blame for Brits not fighting the flab, a survey conducted by LA Fitness has revealed.
Research suggests that nearly half of all Brits, 43 per cent, blame the demands of the workplace for stopping them going to the gym.
Chief Executive of the Fitness Industry Association (FIA), Andree Deane said that research has confirmed that work commitments do interfere with a large percentage of employees' exercise habits in the UK.
She told Workout: "The implications of this for employers are extreme but it's the employees who risk an even worse fate."
For employers, an inactive workforce can have a profound impact on their bottom line through lost productivity, increased absenteeism and reduced motivation levels but more importantly, the health of employees is being put in jeopardy.

Radio presenter teams up with gym chain
BBC Radio Cleveland presenter Alex Hall is to test the new Power Plate machine at Bannatyne's Health Club in Darlington.
Alex has decided to enrol at a health club for the first time in her life after deciding it was time to improve her fitness.
Over the next few weeks she will be keeping a diary of her workouts and will be telling listeners of her radio show the progress she is making.
The Power Plate is a vibrating exercise machine and is designed to combat cellulite and improve general well-being when used in conjunction with regular workouts.

New centre for Lincolnshire
WORK is underway for the construction of a new £4m leisure centre in North Lincolnshire, aiming to create modern fitness facilities for the community.
North Lincolnshire Council is building the centre in Barton after demolishing an old swimming pool to make way for the venture.
The new centre will include a four lane 20m swimming pool, 25 station fitness suite, multipurpose room for exercise classes, meetings and parties, new entrance and spectator areas, extended car parking and remodelled sports hall changing and disabled access to the viewing gallery.

Chain's recruitment drive goes online
LA Fitness has become the first UK gym to provide customers with online sign up facilities following a six figure redevelopment of the website.
Underwired was commissioned by LA Fitness to improve the site's overall user experience, generate new content to drive repeat visits, and increase the efficiency of the company's online activities.
The site is the first part of a redevelopment by the agency that has included planning, design and build.
Underwired worked with Ink Creations, LA Fitness's existing web development agency, to create new functionality so visitors can sign up or renew their membership online during the peak in interest in gym membership over the new year period.

Industry 'too easy' on instructors claim
THE UK fitness industry has made it too easy for instructors to get qualified and only teaches them how to pass an exam, an expert has claimed.
Duncan Green, managing director of Momentum Business Development, said the industry has not put enough focus on the customer and has made getting qualified too easy.
He said: “One of the problems is that instructors are taught how to pass their exams and learn the basics but they are not taught customer service and how to engage with members.
“Too many kids walk out of school and see fitness as an easy option. Working in a gym means that they are not challenged, members rarely engage them and they quickly become bored and disillusioned. If the industry as a whole was to insist that the bar was raised again for the first level of qualifications we would be in much better shape and have instructors that would provide a real service for members.”
