Fitness staff take part in charity race
STAFF from a South Yorkshire leisure centre are putting their fitness to the test by running a 10km race for charity.
The team from Doncaster Dome will be raising money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital when they take part in the event, which last year attracted over 1000 runners and raised £87,000.
Gavin Baldwin, chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in this event for such a worthwhile charity. Sheffield Children’s Hospital is one of only four such specialist children’s trust’s in the UK and every year thousands of patients from across Doncaster visit the hospital to see the paediatric specialists.
Olympic ace test rides new spinner bike
OLYMPIC medalist Katharine Merry put a group of fitness fans through their paces to help improve their fitness levels at Ribby Hall Village’s new £300,000 gym.
The spinning class saw Katharine testing out the new Star Trac Spinner NXT bikes, together with top Spinning instructor and former athlete Les Antoine.
Katharine said: “A Spinning class might be a long way off some of the arduous training that our athletes have to go through, but it’s still hard to work and demands a high level of fitness.”
Ribby Hall Village gym has a dedicated Spinning studio kitted out with Spinning NXT bikes from Star Trac, support sponsor for UK Athletics.
New sports centre for elite athletes
PORTSMOUTH University have opened a new high tech sports centre that will be used to prepare elite athletes for the next two Olympic Games.
The multimillion pound research and teaching facility, The Spinnaker Building, will house several world class laboratories including hot and cold climatic chamber, an immersion facility and a biomechanics laboratory.
The facility has secured work with UK Sport to run scientific tests and prepare athletes from the GB Cycling and UK Triathlon teams for the Beijing Olympics and London 2012.
Sports scientists at the university will also being doing work across a range of sectors, including the oil and energy industry and the military.
Sheffield club gets facelift
A FITNESS venue in Sheffield is set for a complete makeover, as it strives to compete with privately operated rivals.
Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, which hosts major sporting events, has revealed plans to transform its gym and changing areas this summer at a cost of £3 million.
Facility managers Sheffield International Venues (SIV) - who also operate Hillsborough Leisure Centre and Concord Sports Centre in the city - say the changes will provide users with a bigger, brand new state-of-the-art gym, exercise studios and new wet and dry changing rooms.
The new Fitness Unlimited gym will cover an area of 1250 sq m and will include over 100 stations and air conditioning.
