Major revamp for university fitness suite
THE gym at Cambridge University has undergone a major refurbishment, installing more than £50,000 worth of cardiovascular equipment.
Fenner’s Fitness Suite is the first university gym to have the latest Technogym models, complete with Freeview TV and iPod connectivity.
The machines have also been programmed to allow members to view and update their own personalised training programmes via a USB port that allows users to download details of their regime held on memory sticks.
Abbi weighs in with longer opening hours
AN independent gym in Southampton is waiting to see if extending its opening hours will pay off.
Abbi Lacey who owns Lacey’s gym has been running the offer, which sees the gym open from nine until five on Saturdays and ten until four on Sundays, since May after customers approached her asking for longer weekend usage.
And she decided to give the idea a go as she says it is just as important to look after existing customers as it is to attract new ones.
Matt goes back to basics ...
A NEW gym has opened in Chesterfield, aiming to provide a clean, atmospheric weight training facility.
Matt Moss has been a bodybuilder since he was 15 and said it was his dream to be able to open Back 2 Basics, which is based on an industrial estate just outside the town centre.
“I’ve always trained at independent bodybuilding gyms and when Fitness First opened in Chesterfield a few years ago, everyone – including me – started going there for the equipment. But I felt all the atmosphere of an independent had been lost so with this place, my aim is to bring things back to how I think they should be. And I’ve already started gaining members from Fitness First.”
Community rally call to local gyms
INDEPENDENT gyms should support local charities and get involved with the community if they want to earn the respect of their members, according to a gym owner.
Audley Fraser, who runs Accolade Fitness in Southampton is about to host a 24-hour spin to raise money for local charities.
It is the fourth year that the gym has put on the event, but Audley said as well as raising the money, getting people together and coming into the gym is just as rewarding.
