Stroke group making great strides at city gym

A GROUP of Sheffield stroke patients are fighting fit thanks to a special exercise session set up to help them on the road to recovery.
Almost 20 patients, aged between 30 and 80 years old, take part in the weekly stroke group fitness classes at the new Fitness Unlimited gym at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.
To support their rehabilitation, participants complete a series of exercises to help to increase their fitness, mobility, independence and wellbeing.
Activities, which are led by qualified instructors, include squats, lunges, dead lifts and functional circuits and their progress is monitored with a walking test every eight weeks.
Lucy Annandale, the specialist instructor who leads the classes, said: “The sessions have been designed to increases patients’ mobility, confidence and independence and help them get back what they lost.
“By taking part in regular exercise, we see improvements in strength and balance and fewer aches and pains. Some of the patients no longer walk with a stick and have progressed so they can use the gym on their own.
“They really enjoy the competitive challenge and social aspect, meeting up in the cafe for coffee before the session or lunch afterwards.”
