COLCHESTER gym owner Stuart Hamilton has returned from the World Bench Press Championships in South Africa with a string of new records to his name.
Powerlifter Stuart, who has owned and trained at Hamiltons Fitness Centre for over 25 years, was competing in the over 50 years old class and managed to set new European and Commonwealth records with his opening lift of 162.5kg.
Although Stuart’s second lift of 167.5kg would have given him a bronze medal, he twice received two red lights to one for it, so was narrowly beaten into fifth place in the competition by lifters from America, Australia and Japan.
Stuart said: “Although I was disappointed not to receive the bronze medal, I was over the moon to add the two records to my British record from the British Championship last January.
“My next plan is to prepare for next year’s European Championship in Finland. Although I’m lifting quite well I need to add at least another 5kg to my bench press to remain competitive in this class.”
